Does hemp oil contain CBD?
First let’s define hemp oil. Hemp oil is the kind of stuff you can buy at the supermarket for around £6 a bottle. Its proper name is hempseed oil, because it is made out of hemp seeds.
So, does hemp oil contain CBD? The short answer is yes, hemp oil, or more accurately hempseed oil, contains CBD.
However, the amount of CBD oil present in hemp oil is nominal, and not enough to have any kind of effect.
This is why hemp oil is so cheap in comparison with CBD oil. CBD oil is a highly concentrated extract made from the whole hemp plant. Hemp oil is made only of hempseed.

How much CBD is in hemp oil?
A peer-reviewed study carried out at the University of Milan in Italy tested hemp oil to discover its cannabinoid content.
They tested hemp oil for all known cannabinoids, including CBD and THC.
They discovered that CBD was detectable in their samples of hemp oil, but only when very sensitive equipment was used.
The levels of CBD were under 5 ppm (parts per million). The same goes for THC.
This means that the CBD content of the hemp oil was as little as 0.0005%.

How is hemp oil made?
Hemp oil is a cold pressed oil that is primarily a food but can also be used in cosmetics.
It is made by harvesting hemp seeds and cold pressing them to make an oil.
Cold pressing the seeds means that the oil retains most of the nutrients found in hemp seeds, such as the omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Because it is cold pressed and more of a specialist product, hemp oil can be pricy in comparison with other cooking oils.
It does contain high amounts of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids compared with other cooking oils. This makes it a healthier option in comparison with other vegetable oils. It is the highest source of these fatty acids besides flaxseed oil and fish oils.

How is CBD oil made?
The process of extracting CBD oil is much more complex.
The production of CBD oil begins with harvesting the buds, leaves and stems of the hemp plant. These parts of the plant contain much higher concentrations of CBD.
The buds are especially rich in CBD and must be harvested at a specific time when CBD levels are highest.

The raw plant material is then put through a CO2 extraction machine. CO2 extraction uses a substance called supercritical CO2, which is CO2 in a liquid form.
The supercritical CO2 is used as a solvent to extract the CBD from the rest of the plant material. The result is a very thick, dark green CBD paste with a strong smell of hemp/cannabis.
The CBD paste is packed with not only very high concentrations of CBD but all kinds of other compounds. These include terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals. It is for this reason that CBD paste is referred to as a ‘full-spectrum’ extract, because it contains a full spectrum of cannabis compounds.

The CBD paste is then used to make CBD oils, or can be processed further. CBD paste can be distilled to create an even stronger CBD extract called a ‘broad-spectrum’ extract.
