How to make CBD more effective? It’s important to look at CBD and your body as a whole holistically.

In the body nothing is isolated. The cells of your body form systems that work in synergy with another to create physical wellbeing and harmony.

This is good news as it means that any positive changes you make affects the whole.

And it also means that when you take CBD, there are other things you can do to support that process and maximise your results.

How CBD works in harmony with your body

CBD is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. That is how CBD creates wellbeing in the body.

In order for any medicine or supplement to have an effect on your body, it must interact with the cells in your body. That interaction then sets off a chain reaction within the biological systems of your body, which in turn produces the ‘effects’.

This means that many things must be in place in order for CBD to work for you. The bloodstream, receptor sites, nerves and neurotransmitters all play a role. Luckily, the body knows what to do and there’s nothing you need to do to make that happen.

However, there are some things you can do to help your body along and not hinder the process, getting the maximum benefit.

Think of it like working out. You can work out and then eat fast food, or you could eat a protein rich meal with vegetables and wholefoods. The latter is what will help you get the most out of your workout.

Before we get into the dos of how to make CBD more effective, here’s a short list of the don’ts.

Making CBD more effective: The Don’ts.

Don’t drink alcohol.

While an occasional drink won’t set you back too far, regular drinking on a weekly basis will. Alcohol is an inflammatory which can cancel out the inflammatory effects of CBD. Alcohol also causes malabsorption, so can inhibit your body from absorbing CBD.

Don’t smoke.

Smoking has obvious and immediate detrimental effects on the respiratory system. But it can also wear out your central nervous system too. Nicotine, the addictive drug in tobacco, can throw your central nervous system off balance as you become physically dependent. Your central nervous system is key to the benefits of CBD, and so any disruptive drugs should be avoided.

Don’t over-exercise.

Over-exercising means different things to different people. If you’ve never worked out and decide that today you’re going to start off with a 90-minute HIIT workout, you’re probably overdoing it.

The reason why overtraining can make CBD less effective is because it can cause Central Nervous System Fatigue, or CNS fatigue. CNS fatigue is your body’s way of letting you know it’s time to stop, so as to protect you from injury.

However, repeated and prolonged CNS fatigue can take its toll. Not only can it reverse your fitness progress and cause injury and psychological distress. It will also cause any CBD you take to be ineffective. It’s the central nervous system that provides the avenues for CBD to have an effect on your body. If it’s fatigued through over-exercise, it can’t function well and can work against you.

Don’t take a lot of THC.

Cannabis contains both CBD and THC. They both belong to a group of compounds called cannabinoids. CBD and THC have a special relationship in that CBD counterbalances the effects of THC. That is why cannabis plants that are designed to get you extremely high have been modified to contain little CBD, and loads of THC.

If you use CBD oil, but then smoke marijuana often, all the THC entering your bloodstream could completely overpower the CBD in your system. If you do use THC for pain or recreation, while you’re using CBD oil its best the keep it low so as the allow the CBD to work.

What you can do to make CBD oil more effective

  1. Take CBD with Turmeric

As we’ve said, CBD is an extensively studied anti-inflammatory. Turmeric is also known for its anti-inflammatory effects.

This makes CBD and turmeric a perfect combination to maximise those benefits. Inflammation is one of the greatest causes of disease in the body, and reducing it will always increase physical wellbeing.

  1. Take CBD with Ashwagandha

Many people use CBD to improve sleep and create more feelings of calm. Ashwagandha is an ayurvedic medicinal herb that is commonly used to treat anxiety, depression and insomnia. The two supplements will therefore compliment one another, maximising their benefits.

  1. Take CBD sub-lingually

This step is extremely important if you want to get the most out of your CBD experience. It involves holding CBD oil under the tongue, without swallowing, until it is absorbed.

The mucus membranes in the mouth will allow CBD to enter the bloodstream much faster and more efficiently than if you swallow it.

  1. Take CBD before bed

It’s a good idea to take CBD throughout your day, but your last dose should be shortly before bed. While you’re sleeping, your body is in recovery, regeneration, and rest mode. Your fight or flight response relaxes, and important hormones are released. Taking CBD right before this time means that your body and central nervous system are totally relaxed and recuperating.

  1. Take CBD at intervals throughout the day

Taking CBD throughout the day is more effective than taking one larger dose once a day. This is to maintain CBD in the body, rather than stopping and starting over and over again. This also allows CBD to accumulate.

  1. Drink a lot of water

Drinking a lot of water makes vitamins and minerals that you consume more available to the body, since they dissolve in water. Many of the phytonutrients in CBD are more easily absorbed when the body is well hydrated.

  1. Exercise regularly

The benefits of regular exercise are no secret. When you move your body, everything works better. It improves your breathing, circulation, sleep, skin health and so much more. Exercising regularly also helps to balance levels of hormones and neurotransmitters such as cortisol, adrenalin, dopamine, and serotonin. This helps the central nervous system work at peak performance.

  1. Avoid common stressors

When you feel stressed, your fight or flight response is activated. If this is a regular occurrence, it disrupts almost all of your body’s processes. All of the body’s energy is focused on protecting you from the ‘threat’. This means CBD may not be absorbed, or have no effect.

All kinds of things activate our fight or flight. It could be fighting with a spouse or children, toxic friendships, watching the news, or social media. In any case, your goal should be to reduce these common stressors as much as possible.

  1. Sleep at least 8 hours a night

Sleep is the time your body is replenishing and regenerating, and so you want to get as much of that time as possible to get the most out of CBD.

  1. Meditate

The mental and emotional benefits of meditation are numerous. But meditation also has some serious physical benefits. It can lower blood pressure, improve lung function, reduce headaches, and release tightness in the muscles. Meditation also shrinks the amygdala, the part of the brain that signals the fight or flight response.

  1. BONUS TIP!

Finally, here is our bonus top for making CBD oil more effective. It’s not something talked about very much but its powerful just the same. It’s about the power of intention.

If you just take CBD on autopilot without thinking about it, or worse still with a pessimistic attitude, you may not even notice any benefits because of your lack of focus or confirmation bias. If you expect something not to work, your brain is naturally wired to look for evidence that confirms your belief.

When you focus, however, you direct all your energy towards the intention you are focusing upon. It will mean that you’re more mindful of your body and any positive changes you experience. Your brain will be primed to notice changes in your body.

When you take CBD, mentally remind yourself of the intention you have. It’s better to keep it positive and general. Something like: ‘I’m doing this to support a healthy body and mind’. Give it a try and see if it works for you.
