Ever wondered what is CBD oil made of? Or how to tell a good quality CBD oil by the ingredients used to make it?

It turns out the ingredients of CBD oil dramatically effect the quality of the food supplement, and ultimately determines how effective the CBD oil is at supporting a healthy body and mind.

In this article we’ll discuss what CBD oil is made of, and how to tell if a CBD oil is good quality or not depending on its ingredients.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is a food supplement made from hemp plants.

The active ingredient in CBD oil is the cannabinoid CBD (cannabidiol). There are over 100 known cannabinoids that occur in hemp and cannabis plants, including THC and CBD.

CBD oil is not psychoactive, and so will not cause a ‘high’ like THC.

It is usually green or yellow in colour and has an earthy smell and taste.

CBD oil is typically sold in 10ml dropper bottles and is taken orally, either by swallowing it or by holding it under the tongue until it dissolves.

How is CBD oil made?

CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from hemp plants through a process called supercritical CO2 extraction. The CBD extract created by this process is rich in CBD and contains a host of other beneficial phytochemicals.

The CBD extract starts as a thick greenish brown paste. At this point some producers choose to process the extract even further to increase the yield of CBD – but as you’ll see later in this article, this comes at a cost since a lot of organic matter is lost in the process.

Whatever processing methods the CBD extract undergoes, it is then suspended in a carrier oil to create CBD oil. This is done so that the extract is more versatile, tastes better and is somewhat diluted to create a gentler product. The type of carrier oil used is another factor that affects quality, as we will explain later in this article.

What is CBD oil made of?

As we’ve already covered, CBD oil is made from hemp plants, which undergo extraction processes to create a CBD extract. The resulting CBD extract is then mixed into a carrier oil, to create CBD oil.

So CBD oil is made of CBD extract (originating from hemp plants) and a carrier oil, which can vary.

The type quality of both the hemp plants used, the extraction method and the carrier oil all impact the overall quality of the CBD oil supplement.

This ultimately effects the efficacy of the oil. A higher quality CBD oil will of course be a more powerful agent in helping you support your own wellbeing and the wellbeing of your family.

How to tell a good quality CBD oil

So know you know about CBD oil, how it is made and what it is made of.

Here we’re going to explain in detail the different factors that determine the quality of the CBD oil you choose for you and your family.

Organic CBD oil

The ingredients of a good quality CBD oil should first of all be organic.

We wouldn’t be too hung up on the oil being soil association verified, however, since the soil association do not provide verification for CBD products.

What is important is that you locate a CBD oil that has been made from organic hemp plants, or hemp plants that are grown without the use of pesticides.

We all know how pesticides can affect the nutrient composition of plants, and hemp is no different. You also need to ensure that the carrier oil used is organic, cold pressed hempseed oil like ours.

Avoid CBD oils that are made with olive, sunflower or coconut oil unless for a specific reason. The carrier should be hempseed so as so create a uniform, homogenised CBD oil made from 100% hemp.

Be sure to ask your CBD retailer about how their hemp plants are grown and the organic status of their carrier oil. Or you can check out our 100% organic CBD oils here.

Full spectrum CBD Oil

The second factor to consider is how processed the CBD extract is that was used to make the oil.

Remember earlier one we mentioned a few different ways of creating CBD extracts? Well, the heavier processed CBD extracts contain more CBD, but almost nothing else, so you’re missing out on a lot of phytonutrients that are important to the integrity of the CBD extract. Sort of like the difference between an organic orange and vitamin C powder; it’s just not the same.

Therefore look for CBD oils that have been made via supercritical CO2 extraction, and that are what is known as full spectrum CBD oils. They have undergone minimal processing.

Full spectrum means that the CBD oil contains a ‘full spectrum’ of all the beneficial compounds naturally occurring in cannabis and hemp plants. That means not only CBD, but all the other cannabinoids, fatty acids, flavonoids, terpenes, essential vitamins and minerals, plant fibre, chlorophyll, the list goes on.

You don’t want to be missing out on all those beneficial compounds in your CBD supplement.
