There’s a lot of conflicting information out there surrounding CBD oil. And it’s no wonder – since the mainstream media routinely refers to CBD oil as cannabis oil, it’s easy to see why people have become confused. So what is the difference between CBD oil and cannabis oil?

What is the difference between CBD oil and cannabis oil?

The difference between CBD oil and cannabis oil is that cannabis oil is high in THC, the compound that makes you high, and CBD oil is not.

While CBD oil contains trace amounts of THC, it is made from hemp plants that contain THC levels under the legal limit of 0.2%, which is not enough to have a psychoactive effect.

CBD oil is made from hemp, while cannabis oil is made from cannabis.

Hemp and cannabis are part of the same plant family, cannabis sativa.

The thing that defines whether a cannabis sativa plant is classified as hemp or cannabis is the THC concentration.

Any cannabis sativa plant that contains over 02% THC is automatically classified as cannabis, while any plant that has a THC concentration up to 0.2% THC is hemp.

This means that cannabis plants are psychoactive and hemp plants are not.

Hemp and cannabis plants are almost identical in appearance, but there are some key differences that help us spot the difference.

Hemp plants tend to be taller and thinner and produce fewer buds. Cannabis plants have been bred to produce many buds, which makes them shorter and wider.

Hemp is richer in CBD, while cannabis is richer in THC

Now we’ve outlined the basic difference between CBD oil and cannabis oil, let’s look in more detail at the fundamental differences between hemp and cannabis plants.

Hemp plants are used to make CBD oil because they are rich in CBD. Cannabis oil, made from cannabis plants, does contain CBD but is THC dominant.

It’s the relationship between CBD and THC in these plants that give them such different effects and makes cannabis classified as a drug while hemp is not.

What are CBD-rich hemp plants?

CBD-rich hemp plants have been bred over time to contain higher concentrations of CBD.

In the same way that over time cannabis plants have become more potent in THC, CBD-rich hemp plants have been created to maximise the CBD concentrations of the plant.

CBD-rich hemp plants still contain under 0.2% THC, but contain high concentrations of CBD, so are still classified as hemp.

  • CBD oil is very low in THC and dominant in CBD, while cannabis oil is very high in THC and lower in CBD.
  • Cannabis oil has strong psychoactive effects because of THC content.
