How CBD oil works in the body

CBD oil works via many biochemical pathways in the body.

It interacts with the endocannabinoid system, serotonin receptors, and has even been found to support neuroplasticity.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system is a biological messaging system that exists in the bodies of humans and many other animals.

It is made of cannabinoid receptors and endocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that the body produces naturally.

There are two known cannabinoid receptors, CB₁ and CB₂, but there is evidence to suggest there may be more.

It is by interacting with these receptors that CBD, via the endocannabinoid system, exerts a therapeutic effect on the body.

Does CBD increase serotonin?

Research has found that CBD has an affinity with the serotonin receptor 5-HT1a.

This serotonin receptor plays a key role in regulation of mood, fear response, blood pressure, body temperature, and many other bodily functions.

When this receptor is activated, it can increase serotonin levels and decrease levels of norepinephrine, a fight-or-flight hormone.

CBD’s relationship with serotonin receptors may account for CBD oil’s anti-anxiety and calming effects.

CBD and neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to create new neural pathways. Neuroplasticity is important for the prevention and extinction of disease.

Research has found that when CBD interacts with the CB₁ receptor, it triggers new neurons to form in the part of the brain called the hippocampus.

The hippocampus is the part of the brain that controls our emotions, fight or flight response and memories. This is one of the reasons that scientists believe CBD could help people suffering from PTSD.

FAQs

v

How does CBD oil work?

CBD works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system in the body. The endocannabinoid system helps to regulate mood, sleep, inflammation and endocrine, immune and hormone function. Some research suggests that CBD also interacts with some serotonin receptors in the body and promotes neuroplasticity.

v

Does CBD oil have any side effects?

Most anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD has little to no side effects. Evidence from clinical trials suggest that CBD can cause drowsiness and changes in appetite (results based on synthetic CBD-based preparations. No research has been conducted on the side effects of natural CBD preparations.) Research has found CBD to have a ‘favourable safety profile’ in comparison with many pharmaceuticals. Always consult your doctor if you have any doubts about the side effects of CBD.

v

What are the benefits of CBD oil?

While we cannot make any direct medical claims about the efficacy of CBD oil, both animal and human trials have found CBD to be a promising therapy for anxiety disorders, cancer prevention and treatment, Alzheimer’s disease, inflammation and arthritis, and many more. For more information about the benefits of CBD, go to our blog where we upload articles about the benefits of CBD every week. Other great resources include PubMed and Project CBD.
